4 ways to get your files off a Time Capsule that no longer opens
Published: 2026-10-27 · Capsule Bridge
Short answer: the safest way is to copy everything to a modern drive while you still can. You can do it with an older Mac, with an app that speaks AFP such as Capsule Bridge, by replacing the Time Capsule's file-sharing software, or by reading its hard disk directly.
| Way | Good | Watch out |
|---|---|---|
| Older Mac (macOS 26 or earlier) | No new software. Works like before. | You need that Mac, and it must stay on the old system. |
| Capsule Bridge (coming soon) | Disk appears in Finder, Files and Android. Nothing installed on the Time Capsule. | Not released yet. |
| TimeCapsuleSMB (community project) | Gives the Time Capsule modern SMB sharing. | Early-stage. It changes the software running on the device. Back up first. |
| Take out the hard disk | Direct access to the files. | You must open the device. The disk uses Apple's own format and the backup is a large bundle. Follow a guide for your model. |
1. Use an older Mac
If you still have a Mac on macOS 26 or earlier, connect it by Ethernet or to the same Wi-Fi, choose Go, then Connect to Server and enter the Time Capsule's address. Copy your folders to an external drive.
2. Use an app that speaks AFP
AFP is the protocol the Time Capsule uses. An app that speaks it directly does not need macOS to support it. Capsule Bridge is built for exactly this: the disk appears in Finder on Mac and in the Files app on iPhone, iPad and Android. It is coming soon.
3. Replace the file-sharing layer
The TimeCapsuleSMB project puts a newer Samba server on the Time Capsule. Reviewers describe it as early. Because it changes the device, copy your most important files first by another method.
4. Read the disk directly
Many owners take the hard disk out of the Time Capsule and read it in a drive dock. It is possible, but it means opening the device and handling a disk that may be a decade old. Use it as a last resort.
Whichever way you choose
Copy first, check that the copies open, and only then decide what to do with the Time Capsule. Our copy checklist walks through it.
