Time Capsule not showing in Finder? What to check on macOS 27

Published: 2026-10-29 · Capsule Bridge

Short answer: on macOS 27 an old Time Capsule that will not open is usually fine. The Mac no longer speaks AFP, the sharing language the Time Capsule uses. A few quick checks tell you whether it is that, or a real hardware problem.

Five quick checks

  1. Is it on and is the light normal? Power it on and give it a few minutes to start.
  2. Same network? Use an Ethernet cable to the Mac or the same Wi-Fi as the Mac.
  3. Does it appear in the Finder sidebar under Network, but fail to open? That points to the missing AFP support, not a broken disk.
  4. Try an older Mac that runs macOS 26 or earlier, if you have one. If it opens there, the disk is fine.
  5. Do not reset or erase the Time Capsule. That deletes your data and will not bring AFP back.

What we measured on one Time Capsule

On a 2013 Time Capsule (firmware 7.6.7) the device still announced SMB file sharing on the network, but the SMB port was closed. Only AFP answered. That is why Finder on macOS 27 cannot use it, even though it looks present.
